Foil Drive Help: Charging Your Battery Safely
Foil Drive batteries are high-energy lithium-ion batteries, so take a moment before every charge to check the battery, the charger and where you're charging.
Three checks before every charge
- Correct charger? Foil Drive batteries run at different voltages and chargers aren't interchangeable. Check the rating on both the battery and the charger. For example, the Slim Endurance is a 28V battery and must not be charged with a 40V charger, and Gen2.5 batteries such as Fusion need their dedicated 43V charger. A plug that fits doesn't mean the charger is compatible. Never modify a charger, battery or connector, and if you're unsure, don't connect it.
- Battery cool? Let the battery come back to normal temperature after riding before you charge it. Don't try to cool it quickly with water, ice or a fridge.
- Battery undamaged? Don't charge a battery that has been dropped or hit hard, is crushed, punctured, swollen, distorted, unusually hot, leaking or smells odd, has damaged or corroded connectors, or may have water inside.
If the answer to any of these is "no" or "not sure", don't charge until you've confirmed it's safe.
Where to charge
- Somewhere cool, dry and well ventilated, away from direct sun, heat and anything flammable.
- Keep airflow around the charger and never cover it while it's running.
- Use the supplied LiPo safe bag as directed.
- Don't charge in a hot, closed vehicle, and don't leave a charging battery unattended or overnight.
While charging
Keep an eye on things. Stop immediately if you notice unexpected heat, swelling, smoke, unusual smells, leaking or odd charger behaviour. If a battery starts behaving abnormally: isolate (stop charging and, only if it's safe, move it away from people and buildings), contain (if it's safe and there's no active fire or dangerous venting, fully submerge it in fresh water), and monitor (call emergency services, keep the area clear and watch from a safe distance).
After charging
Unplug the battery from the charger and the charger from the wall, and let both cool before packing them away. For longer breaks, don't leave the battery sitting fully charged or deeply discharged. See Battery care & storage for storage charge guidance.
